Frequently asked questions:

What Does a Treatment Feel Like?
With  each person and from treatment to treatment, what is experienced during a Reiki treatment will differ. Usually each person experiences a feeling of deep peaceful, relaxation resulting from the release of tension, anxiety, and fear. Some drift off to sleep and at the end of the treatment, people say they feel refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.

It is different for each person, but, many individuals report feeling cold, pulsating heat, or a tingling sensation during a session, and most enter a calm, relaxed state. People have reported that chronic or acute pain can diminish or completely vanish.

How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki therapy is a specific method of body energy work.  Reiki is a very gentle, yet deeply powerful “hands on or off” technique that applies to the body’s meridian system (the body’s energy transportation system); the chakra system (the body’s energy stations); and the auric field (the body’s protection system).  Life force (chi or ki) nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force (chi or ki) is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where blockages have occurred. In so do(chi or ki) Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

What is a Reiki attunement?
A Reiki attunement is the process by which a person receives the ability to give Reiki treatments. The Reiki Master administers the attunement during the Reiki class. During the attunement, the Reiki Master will touch the students head, shoulders, and hands and use one or more special breathing techniques. How long does it take to learn Reiki?
It will vary from lineages, which may vary from three to five levels of training.  Each class will vary in length from one to two days.

History of Reiki:

The history of Reiki as we know is sketchy and is continuing to be rediscovered through countless research.  With this, there are many contradictions, and hearsay about what is the truth.

The one man that rediscoved the Reiki energy, was named Dr. Mikao Usui.  He was born in 1865 in Taniai, Japan and died in 1926.

In 1922 Dr. Usui experienced a profound enlightenment while meditating during a 21-day fasting retreat on Mount Kurama in Japan. While standing under a waterfall, he did a meditation designed to open and purify the Crown Chakra.  He received the healing ability he called Reiki, along with the knowledge and ability to impart that to others.

Dr. Usui opened a Reiki practice Tokyo in 1921 and was the founder of the Usui Reiki Healing Society, and trained more than 2000 students. Sixteen of them were initiated as Reiki Master/Teachers, including Mr. Chujiro Hayashi. It is through Mr Hayashi that the "Western" line of Reiki has progressed.

Mr. Hayashi started his own practice and began teaching students and trained 13 Reiki Master/Teachers.. It is here that Mrs. Hawayo Takata, of Hawaii, discovered Reiki. After being healed of a serious illness, she became a student of Mr. Hayashi and achieved her Master/Teacher level in 1938.

Mrs. Takata (1900 - 1980) studied with Mr. Hayashi in Japan, and then returned to Hawaii to establish Reiki Healing Clinics. She initiated 22 Reiki Master/Teachers.

Dr. Usui states in his handbook that "Our Reiki Ryoho is something absolutely original and cannot be compared with any other spiritual path in the world" and "It is an original therapy, which is built upon the spiritual power of the universe."

There are many different styles of Reiki taught throughout the world based on individual learning environments and cultural background.  The Usui system is the most popular and is the “parent” of all other systems of Reiki teachings.  All Reiki teachings are taught in a system of levels, known as degrees.
