The Significance of the Willow

Willow is thought to be derived from the root meaning “to bend”, or “to be pliant.” Other valuable traits of the willow include its flexibility. The willow is one of the few trees that can bend in outrageous poses without snapping. This is a powerful metaphor for those of us on a spiritual path. The message here is to adjust with life rather than fight it.

The Willow tree has always been known as a tree of enchantment. Orpheus, who was the greatest musician and poet of Greek myth, was depicted as receiving the mystic gift of eloquence by touching a willow. The Celts also associated it with poets, and young suitors would commonly wear a sprig of willow to acknowledge the power and status of the old "wise one," the Crone.  In rituals the willows is used for gaining insight and inspiration. The energies of the willow can help those who are suffering a loss, by sleeping with willow leaves under their pillow.

The Willow Tree is known for its medicinal purposes.  Hippocrates wrote about Willow’s medicinal properties in the 5th century BC.  Native Americans relied on it as a staple of their medical treatments, using the bark for aspirin. It is thought that the Druids used Willow bark to cure worms and dysentery. It also is very good to use as a divining rod for finding water.

Years ago, she was first introduced to internal energy medicine (Chi or Ki) as a student of the ancient teachings of martial arts.  She became more aware, connected and in tune with many levels of Chi or Ki eneregy in martial arts and thus betan her personal journey and spiritual quest.

Tracy and Mike are the owners and creators of Whispering Willows. Mike is a behind the scenes person, but takes much pleasure in sharing Tracy’s vision of offering high quality products that promote harmony and balance.
